There is no direct translation for the word hygge, but many credit the high levels of happiness in Denmark to this cultural attribute. Loosely described, hygge is coziness, charm, kinship and simpleness. It’s about creating an atmosphere of comfort with candles and aromas, and appreciating simple activities that bring joy such as reading, doing puzzles and sharing a bottle of wine with friends. The Danish have apparently perfected this and practice it often. With the weather getting colder and the nights get longer, there seemed no better time to introduce this to the staff to help cope with the winter doldrums.
